Why rites of passage? Because for as long as humans have walked the earth, communities have known this truth: children don’t simply “grow up” — they cross thresholds.

Here is some truth for you: I run mother-son connection retreats and I’m feeling my teenage son pulling away from me. I am feeling the most disconnected I ever have from him. In my mind I’m thinking: don’t tell your readers that.

I’m a single mum of four. I pay my bills and mortgage with no government assistance or child support. And my days are infused with peace, joy and play. This isn’t a fairy tale. It’s what happens when we stop choosing between being successful and being soft.
